Ruby Red Slippers

I have glittered some chucks before - in green and black - but I have wanted a red pair for awhile now. Kind of a punk version of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. This year for my birthday Shelby surprised me with a pair and I was finally able to get started on my ruby red slippers! I mean chucks. :)

I've seen tutorials for DIY glitter shoes before but they always involve loose glitter. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who hates having their house look like Tinkerbell came for a visit so I thought that I would share my method which is a lot easier and less messy. It's pretty simple really. Just grab a pair of shoes (with the laces removed) and some glitter glue made for fabric.

The fabric of the shoe will show through the glitter a bit so if they aren't already the right color, you will want to use some fabric paint in your color of choice first.

Squirt some of the glitter glue on your shoe, dip a small paint brush in it and start painting away! Be careful around the edges because this stuff is permanent.

Let it dry and continue adding more coats until you reach your desired level of sparkle. In the photo above, the shoe in front has only one coat while the one in back has several. To boost the coverage with fewer coats, I squirted some of the glue in a small plastic container, added some loose glitter in a matching shade and mixed it together. Just make sure to put a lid on it in between coats so that it doesn't dry out.

Now I will always be able to make my way back home. :)

I got mine at JoAnn's but you should be able to find it at any craft store. We had to hunt for it because they had fabric paint in three different spots but we finally found the right stuff over by the t-shirts. I hope your girls like it!

I did the same thing to some shoes I have, but I used car paint. They were really metallic. My shoes matched my car!
