After working off and on for almost a year - the kitchen makeover is finally done! The sun hasn't been very cooperative lately so the pictures aren't as good as I had hoped but I just couldn't wait any longer to show you the finished project!
Check out some of these before and afters:

The most time-consuming part of this project was definitely painting the cabinets. Since they were so dark, it took three coats on primer and two coats of white paint. It was tedious but it only cost $100 for the paint and primer versus thousands to replace the cabinets.

I wasn't a big fan of the handles in the middle of the door so before painting, I put wood filler in the holes and my husband drilled new holes in the corners for the new knobs. The hinges are the originals but they look completely different against the white.

The window over the sink is about 5ft from our neighbors back door so it needed some kind of covering for privacy but I didn't like the blinds - especially since they had to stay closed all of the time anyway. I replaced the blinds with a faux frosted glass window treatment. We still have privacy but it lets in all kinds of light and looks really pretty.

We installed some crown moulding (which was actually door casing) and painted it and the ceiling white as well. I painted the walls a lovely blue-gray color.

All of the trim got a coat of white paint as well and the blinds were taken down and replaced with cafe curtains. The buffet kind of blends in with the floors so I'm thinking it may need a coat of black paint.

I painted the closet doors white (by the way, this is the utility closet where my old craft room resided) and replaced the handles with the same kind that I used on the cabinet drawers. The coffee sign is from my mother-in-law. She hand painted it onto a piece of poster board for the set of a play at the school she works for. She kept it after the play was over and gave it to me!

The ceiling fan and light fixture that came with the house were really ugly and used expensive bulbs that kept burning out so they got replaced as well. New vinyl tile flooring completed the makeover. The original countertops stayed but everyone who walks in asks if they are new too because look completely different with all of the changes around them.
A few close ups of some details:

This faux etched glass window treatment that I used above the kitchen sink is a little difficult to photograph but it is beautiful in person.

Cabinet hardware. The knobs and handles are by Liberty. The hinges came with the house and are the same ones that you see in the before pictures.

I'm so happy with how everything turned out! It took a looooooong time but it was worth it to get everything how we wanted it and on such a small budget.

If I wasn't totally lost for words, I'd say something really smart, but I only barely manage NOT to faint. Is that the same room? The same house, even?
ReplyDeleteWow, what a makeover! Congratulations on finally being done. It looks like it was a huge undertaking! I love the color of the cabinets and the cheery pops of red. And the coffee sign? Totally to die for.

ReplyDeletethat looks so great and amazingly different! i love that since you were painting you were able to get rid of the center space-i wish i had the ok to paint mine so i could get rid of the handle space. instead we had to install faceplates on everything, and then the new handle. grr.
ReplyDeletelove the pops of red, and that wall color is fab!
Amazing transformation...Looks so good! I love the window too! Great job:)
ReplyDeleteLooks great!!!!! It looks so much more modern now!! We are big into DIY and do everything we possibly can ourselves! Even if we could afford it, I wouldn't!! I'd spend that money on something else!!
ReplyDeleteW.T.F. No way it's the same room. You are so talented. Must have skipped your Aunt entirely!!!! Congratulations, it is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you all! I'm really happy with how it turned out and I'm glad you like it too. :) It was a lot of worth but the end result was definitely worth the effort!
ReplyDeletereally great job Megan!! :)
ReplyDeleteMegan that is fantastic. You had an amazing space to work with, and you sure transformed it to one beautiful kitchen. New friend here. I am hosting a chalk paint giveaway you may love this new paint.
ReplyDeletelooks great!
ReplyDeleteThis is really amazing. You should be so proud of yourself for doing it on such a great budget, too. I love the black hardware against the white cabinets.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely paint that buffet! Black w/ crystal knobs would be very pretty (a favorite combo on mine) but so would white! You've got such a great eye that I'm sure you'll find something.
I found you from the Tt & Jello party!
Just came over from Tatertots and Jello and love your kitchen makeover! It looks so amazing! I love how you kept the original hinges with the white paint. It looks like a completely different room!
ReplyDeleteIt‘s so nice that I found your blog about your link at 'i heart nap time'. Of course I’ve scrolled a little and like what I see. Now I’m your new follower! ;)

Wowzers! This is very pretty! I really love the wall color against the white of the cabinets and trim! That faux etched glass is great--I had a clawfoot tub right next to a window in my old home--I used a similar product by lighing effects to keep the room bright!
ReplyDeleteI just reno'd my kitchen, too. I spent about $1,200, but bought new cabinets and a dishwasher. Hope you'll check it out! http://www.shabbyfrenchcottage.com/2011/05/birthday-shopping.html FYI--I'm now following!

What is the faux glass window treatment? Is it a vinyl covering that I have seen at Home Depot?
ReplyDeleteLove it and would love it in my bathroom.
Wow, what a change!!! Love it!!! You have a really nice and very big kitchen!!! You can be proud of it ;)
ReplyDeleteRita@ martenssmily
AMAZING!!! I love it!
ReplyDeleteAmazing job, you should be super proud :)
ReplyDeleteYou did it!!! WTG Megan! It looks great. I'm totally jealous of the number of cabinets you have - yes, a pain to paint, but oh the storage!!!
ReplyDeleteOur kitchen remodel took longer than we wanted too. The majority was done within 3 months, but then putting up the final molding took another 9. No good reason... it just did.
Just curious! How are the painted cabinets holding up? We painted some in our bathroom and they don't look good. I'm thinking I didn't do a very good job with prep as they are chipping and in one case a sizable area (1 inch by 1 inch) just peeled right off. I'm afraid if I paint the kitchen cabinets it'll be an awful mess. Your kitchen is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job in improving the overall looks of your kitchen. From hanging cabinets to great looking floors, they really look amazing. I also love the idea of using vinyl tiles in making the floors compelling. The colors really complement well with your furniture and appliances. Concrete Perth
