Pinching Pennies - Week Three

Welcome to Week Three of Pinching Pennies with Polish The Stars! Sorry I missed last week. Things are still crazy around here! I don't understand why everyone talks about "lazy summer days". For my family, Summer is the busiest time of year. I am looking forward to my lazy winter hibernation!

Anyway, today I would like to feature Buzzing The Day Away and her tutorial on Making Crayons using old broken ones!

My tip for the week is to stopping wasting money by throwing away rotten food! Now I'm not saying you should eat food that has gone bad because that is just disgusting. What I am saying is that you should store food properly so that it doesn't go bad before you get a chance to eat it. If I purchase an ingredient that goes bad quickly I usually try to cook that meal shortly after my grocery shopping trip when it is still fresh and has the most nutritional value but things don't always happen the way you plan.

One of the things that seems to go bad the fastest for me is fresh cilantro. I recently bought a bunch and the next day it was already started getting brown and wilted. So I did a google search and found that with cilantro you should snip off the ends and place them in a glass with a little water. Then cover the cilantro with a ziploc bag and place in the refrigerator. It has now been 10 days and my cilantro is still fresh!

So the next time you purchase a perishable item, do a quick search to make sure that you are storing it properly. You can also freeze items that you know you won't be able to use right away. Check out this Home Freezing Guide to find out the best way to freeze different items and which ones aren't safe to freeze.

Also, cooked food should generally be eaten within three days so if you know your family won't be eating leftovers quickly, consider freezing it instead.

Alright, your turn! Link up all of your money saving (or money making) tips and tricks! If there is something that you would like to share but you don't have a post written about it, feel free to leave your tip in the comments section!
